Portrait Drawing and Anatomy- David J. Kassan

June 19, 20, 21 2009

The focus of this course will be on advanced life drawing methods to investigate the underlying rhythm, expression and emotion of the modern portrait. We will explore both charcoal and graphite with one pose for the entire time so that we can patiently observe and record our findings. Students will execute preliminary rough drawings before moving on to a full-scale finished drawing. All observation will be cumulative and used towards finishing the final work. Instruction will include discussion of practical technical information on different drawing mediums and surfaces, the properties of light on form and how the topography/depth of the face’s form can be visualized and represented. Most importantly, students will learn to transcend the materials so that their full concentration is placed on expressing the model’s prfesence and emotion. My goal is to give this class a sense of community, where anything art related can be discussed (books, galleries, artists, techniques), debated, enlightened and experienced. The class is a collaborative group where there is no competition, only sources of help and encouragement among many students of many diverse backgrounds and different levels of proficiency. I will be able to share my experiences and insights into studying, exhibiting, approaching galleries, clients, collectors and the overall development of my career as a visual artist over the past 10 years. This will be an intensive drawing practicum with a concentration on the artist in whole. Students will be challenged to develop a strong foundation from which to explore and evolve, for years to come.

The participants will begin to use the language of paint and the language of landscape painting to discover a personal connection to landscape and to painting. Figure Drawing (Skaneateles, NY ) - Gary Trento

July 6-8

Workshop ImageObservation of the human body has a very long and historical association with the art of drawing. The artistic use of the human body over many centuries has led to numerous drawing conventions, such as and linear and planar drawing. Demonstration and hands on experience with these conventions, in conjunction with enhancement of observational skills, will be the immediate goal of this intense three day course.
Course Objectives: 1. design ‘pictorial field’ effectively (not cropping figure nor making drawing too small); 2. within a five minute time frame be able to get an accurate, but general sense, of whole gesture of pose. 3. use of midline or spine to establish how torso is positioned spatially relative to viewer; 4. expansion and contraction in contraposto; 5. use of line quality that ‘moves’ easily and exhibits sense of drawing energy and investigation of observational process; 5. Foreshortening is the visual length of a form as distinct from its actual, measurable length and it is the single most important consideration for proportions in drawing plastic volume in space. To this end we will study how drawing establishes oblique space, the use of broken contours, and the term ‘stepping back’ to create the sensation of depth.

July 27-29 2009

Workshop ImageReplicating old master techniques with modern oil painting materials.

Today’s art materials are safer, more convenient, and more durable than those available to the old masters. Students will work on several paintings simultaneously, since drying time is required between layers, beginning with a copy of an old master painting, Vermeer's " Girl with a Red Hat". These techniques will also be applied using your own photos as reference as you proceed to work from your own images. Students will need to bring at least six of their own photographs (landscape, portrait, still life, etc.) 5" x 7" or larger to use as reference for their original art work. An image of Vermeer's painting will be provided. There are two sections for this workshop. Each section can be taken separately or both sequentially for a longer time to complete your art works under the supervision of the instructor.

Drawing from Nature: The Oriental View - Karen Bakke

Aug. 10-12 2009

Workshop ImageThe artist Arthur Wesley Dow and his summer art schools (on both the east and west coast) in the early 20th century brought many of the lessons of Japanese art to American artists and art teachers. Shape, form, Notan, composition, line quality, etc, were all brought back to the classroom by people who attended these summer schools. I am going to teach a drawing class using some of these ideas, and based on natural forms. In the northeast in the fall there are many ripe growing things (3 or 4 crab apples with leaves attached, berries and leaves, etc. etc. ) and we will work with these very beautiful things to do a series of drawings using these interesting Japanese ideas.
